CUT

Berlin, Peking 1999 -2001

Wenn ich 1999 mit Jiwei ins Kino gegangen bin, konnte ich oft sehen, wie er sich mitten im Film mit einer Hand die halbe Leinwand zuhielt — das zerschnittene Bild interessierte ihn mehr als die Handlung, die ich ihm dann oft hinterher bei einem Glas Wein erzählt habe.

CUT ist eine Video und Objekt Installation mit fünf Aktionen. Für die 2. Aktion, in der eine rote chinesische Laterne zerschnitten wird, hat die Firma Osram eine spezielle Glühbirne entwickelt, die auch nach dem CUT noch leuchtet. In der 5. Aktion zerschneidet Jiwei sich selbst in vier Teile.

This publication features Li Jiwei’s installation ‚CUT‘, in which ‚four objects are sawn in half in a meticulous act of dissection that is recorded on video. The whole activity of cutting and sawing is part of the work itself. The group of objects, consisting of a red lanter, an arm chair, a computer and a glass of water is supplemented with video images of the artist himself which are likewise cut in two.‘ – Andrew James Johnston.
